North America Needs 300,000 Space Workers by 2030. Are We Ready?

The demand for skilled space professionals is growing across North America. A recent workforce study covering Canada and the United States projects that the Canadian space sector will need over 25,000 new workers by 2030. For the U.S., that number is close to 250,000.

These are not just forecasts. They are early signals of a talent challenge that is already taking shape.

Where Demand Is Coming From

The growth is being driven by both commercial expansion and strategic needs in areas like Earth observation, satellite communications, in-orbit servicing, launch systems, and national security. In Canada, the largest job increases are expected in engineering, manufacturing, technical operations, and mission support. A noticeable rise is also projected in early career roles, requiring a mix of technical fluency and adaptability.

On the U.S. side, the numbers are even more dramatic. The civil and commercial space industries, combined with defense-related programs, are rapidly scaling up. The hiring gaps they face will shape the cross-border competition for talent.

What It Means for Canada

Canada is already seeing a shift. Organizations across industry, government, and academia are recognizing that without deliberate action, the workforce pipeline will not keep up. What is different this time is the speed and scale. These roles are not just for engineers and scientists. They also include technicians, operators, systems integrators, and program managers.

More importantly, the skills required are evolving. Experience with spacecraft systems is no longer enough. Today’s missions rely on cross-disciplinary expertise that spans data, autonomy, software integration, and advanced manufacturing.
