Building a Space Venture (Webinar Recap)

Aaron Topple (NASI’s COO) recently ran a webinar on “Architecting the Future” – a roadmap for launching your own space startup. He kicked things off by reminding everyone that the space industry is booming (and frankly hungry for skilled people). In practical terms, that means there are big gaps in infrastructure and workforce that new ventures can fill.

Spot the gaps first.  Aaron stressed that a smart space business starts by finding unmet needs out there. As he put it, you want to learn “how to pinpoint critical infrastructure gaps that new ventures can solve”. In everyday terms: look around the space sector and ask, “What’s missing?” Maybe launch logistics, satellite servicing, or technical training programs. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s a real problem. That way your venture is solving something the industry actually needs.

Lean on standards and strategy. Another key point Aaron made was not to reinvent the wheel. He advised aligning your startup with national standards and goals right from the start. In other words, use the industry-approved practices and certifications that give your business instant credibility. For example, follow certified training pipelines or recognized technical benchmarks.  He also talked about syncing up with government space strategies – essentially matching your objectives to federal innovation goals. This isn’t just for show; it means regulators and big partners see you as “mission-ready,” and it can open doors (like easier funding or procurement) down the road.

Build your team like a mission. Aaron hammered home that people are the heart of any venture. He urged founders to create mission-ready teams of trained professionals who can hit the ground running.  That means hiring or training folks with the right skills (think engineers, systems technicians, ops specialists) and setting up systems so they can perform under pressure. In NASI’s own words, this looks like a workforce strategy that “prioritizes job-ready professionals and scalable internal systems to ensure long term performance”. Basically get team members in the door with a solid space-industry background (or a certified qualification) so they don’t need months of hand-holding.

Throughout the talk, Aaron’s style was very down-to-earth. He reminded us that execution matters. As he often says in his keynotes, “Scaling in complex industries… takes operational clarity, aligned leadership, and the ability to execute under real pressure”. In plain speak, that means having a clear plan, strong leaders, and a culture of getting things done – exactly the mindset you need when rockets and satellites are on the line.

Wrap-up: In short, Aaron’s big takeaways were: focus on solving real problems in the space economy, build on established standards, and get your team operational from Day 1. No fluff or pie-in-the-sky ideas. Just practical steps to turn your vision into a sustainable space venture.
